LOS ANGELES, CA – Saturday, April 17, 2010 — With air travel out of the UK and Europe still at a standstill, and conditions predicted to deteriorate further due to the huge cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull, the members of Bad Lieutenant and their management have come to the disappointing decision to cancel their Chicago and New York dates that had been set to take place on Monday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 21, respectively.

“We’re stuck in Manchester,” said Bad Lieutenant’s Bernard Sumner.  “We were hoping that conditions might change at the last minute and we’d be able to come and play for our fans.  Obviously, this is a situation out of everyone’s control, and we are crushed that we won’t be coming to America for these dates.”

Since British air space was closed on Thursday morning, the band also canceled their planned appearances in San Francisco last night and today at the Coachella festival near Palm Springs, CA.

Refunds will be available for ticket holder at the point of purchase.

I believe I am the lucky winner of back stage passes to the next NYC gig. Why? Because I am now 0-5 in seeing them.

0-1: 11/18–Bought flight and tix to see Chicago show and band couldn’t get visas on time.
0-2: 11/21–I live in NYC but this show was also canceled due to visa issues.
0-3: 12/20–I was in Berlin and booked a flight to Manchester to see the show, but, a snowstorm forced a flight cancellation and I missed the gig.
0-4: 12/21–Due to the Manchester cancellation, I rerouted to London to see them there instead, but, snow caused major traffic delays and I left 3 hours before the show, but, arrived 45 minutes into the gig and only caught the last two songs.
0-5: 4/17–Purchased Coachella tickets specifically to FINALLY see a Bad Lieutenant set but the Volcano in Iceland forced another cancellation due to airspace issues.

I believe I am now the lucky winner of backstage passes to the next NYC gig. PLEASE. This is actually becoming quite funny.

    • Jeff Tucker says:

Yeah…I flew all the way from Austin Texas to see the show. So glad ticket master sent out a cancelation e-mail after I got on the plane! I guess that is what I get for not watching the news.

It was one expensive trip to go have some drinks in a Chicago Pub and then fly home.

All I could do was just laugh!

    • Jeff Tucker says:

Oh yeah…I forgot, PLEASE COME TO AUSTIN TEXAS! ACL FESTIVAL WOULD BE PERFECT!

  2. MAD AS HELL says:

    un-fucking believable

  3. Jason says:

This sux! Hopefully when I buy tix again to see them in Chicago there’s not a third cancellation!

  4. monkeyking says:

good thing you guys didn’t get caught flying during the eruption. hope you guys can make it back to a reschedule tour, to the center of the city in the night, waiting for you.

  5. [...] a statement posted on the group’s website, Sumner writes, We were hoping that conditions might change at [...]

  6. Jesse says:

Wow, two times! Hopefully the third time’s a charm. I was wondering if you might now have American prices you might be willing to charge for you shirts. :) The exchange rate is pretty extreme. At any rate, I hope you come back soon. God Bless.

  7. Miranda O'Dowd says:

Yeah. There isn’t going to be a third time trying for me in Chicago.

  8. Kyle says:

Bad luck guys but I have waited 5 years to see your return to Chicago so waiting a few more months is no big deal. Thanks for keeping us updated and looking forward to seeing you on the stage soon.

  9. Peter from The Other Manchester says:

Can someone from the BL management team please let us know if there is any chance of a rescheduled US tour this year? Since there were only a few dates, a lot of us had to make our own travel arrangements well in advance, so any lead time you can provide would be most helpful.

  10. Snidely Whiplash says:

    Curses, Foiled agaiin!

  11. Fingers-Crossed No Longer says:

    Dear Bad Lieutenant/Management/Etc. –

I leave Tuesday for my second trip to NYC to see you guys. Non-refundable, of course. I mean second cancelled show. This is getting expensive. I will travel to see my favorite artist. I was at the New Order show in NYC in 2005 and in SF in 2001 after all. I am grateful for your safety, however I think at Texas date is now in order.

    One time = ok
    Two times = Texas Date

    C’mon don’t leave me disappointed.

  12. Cool318 says:

There are speculations that the air travel will be grounded for a week. So rather than waiting and keep changing the schedule to next available flight, canceling the remaining shows is an optimal decision. You don’t need to be an economist to make this decision.

I really don’t see what’s the problem with some fans here. If you can’t see BL, go do some other things. Its not like NYC or Chicago is some ghost town in the middle of a desert.

Think of this just another short vacation trip. We flew into SF with the hope of seeing BL live. And now what? We ended up visiting places in SF, enjoying great food, wine and such.

Some of you need to turn this experience into some more positive.

  13. CK says:

I suspected this was going to happen. Even if things were looking better, I couldn’t imagine them coming here to play 2 shows, and then come back later hauling all of that equipment to do two more shows. Probably better to do them all at once. But yeah, two times in a row? Crazy! But certainly, this was so utterly random and absolutely, 100% out of anyone’s control, so I sincerely hope nobody is upset with the band.

  14. Will in Los Angeles says:

May, June, July, August, etc. We just want you guys to come play live in the US.

  15. NuOrdrMan says:

    Hi guys,

I like the idea of a limited edition T-Shirt for those people holding both sets of tickets to the cancelled shows!
Back in 1989 (I think it was) I went to a Skinny Puppy concert and just as the band started up all heaven and Earth broke loose in a thunderstor. Because it was Phoenix, AZ it made it all quite crazy!

So howz about a BL T-shirt with all the cancelled dates on it (“One time” for the government,”two times” for the haze, three times to get it right – tour)
The pther guy is right…the exchange rates make these very costly :-)

I love you guy. You know Kansas City is smack in the middle of the US – come out here and play at Starlight, you would pack it out. Added bonus: I’ll have you all over for Kansas City Ribs and pints!

    Take care,

  16. NuOrdrMan says:

…Oops! Looks like I can’t type very well from this Blackberry – I’m all thumbs! (Last post)

  17. Mike G. says:

    Hello BL
I am going to Europe this summer. I’m seeing Dylan on the 3rd of July so I can’t make Roskilde. Any chance of scheduling addition european dates this summer. Hope, hope.

  18. Cathy says:

I sincerely look forward to your rescheduled U.S. dates. I am glad you are all safe and know this was beyond anyone’s control. I know everyone is disappointed right now, but some day this will make for a good laugh!

    “A Volcano???”

    “Yes, a volcano.”

  19. Greg says:

I’m disappointed, though I get it. Please email fans asap when you will be returning. Come back to Chicago soon.

  20. ApathyFern says:

Ditto on the Texas bit. My wife and I are flying to NYC tomorrow returning Thursday to see….well….I guess NYC. Could be worse to be sure. It is God’s will, I suppose.

  21. CK says:

Ummmm, did someone forget to tell Ticketmaster? According to their website you can still buy tickets for the Chicago show!?!!?!?!?!?

  22. SoCo says:

This so crazy. We were holding out hope that travel could resume. A group of us made plans well in advance for NYC show–traveling from Texas for a show during the week while still mainting our employment upon our return was not easy. I guess nothing really is. Hurry back to the U.S. and maybe a show in Texas may ease our grieving hearts. But understood that safety is priority and that mother nature is in control.

  23. L.Solanki Brooklyn NYC 11219 says:

I am so upset and sad that you guys had to cancel again, me and my 5 friends were very excited to see you guys in NYC but please come again because we will come to see you.

  24. Eduardo says:

I hope you and everyone is OK first of all….I hope you could come before Chrismas 2010 that would be nice!!!!!I hope everything gets better soon…I’am still waiting!!!!Your fan….Have a good day…And thanks for sharing B.S….

  25. Bingodog says:

I’m all for back stages passes for those you have tried several times and failed! Some have told me to give up, but I refuse. I will try again. Seeing Benard play is on my bucket list. A back stage pass would be a dream come true. C’mon you guys….throw me a bone!

    • CK says:

Throw all of us a bone! There’s not so many of us who post here that it would be too many fans to have backstage. Please?

    • NuOrdrMan says:

Bernard and Steve – I like that idea! Backstage or Aftershow passes for your loyal fans :-) I’ve been with you for 26 years…not quite from the very start…but a fook’in long time!

      • Bingodog says:

While others jammed to Nirvana in high school. I had my Joy Division/New Order. I have been very loyal. Even traveled to Manchester just so I can say I’ve been there. Please give me a back stage pass! Pretty please!

  26. Eduardo says:

Hello B.L. if you can’t come to the States please make a DVD concert or on your next Album!!!!?..Thank you very much…Your fan from California….2010..Have a good day….Hope to see you soon….

  27. Cathy says:

Guys can we change the subject? We all want the band to reschedule as soon as possible, I think we all agree on that. But — I know this isn’t really the NOOL forum, but let’s try something new. We have probably all seen the set list from the UK shows and the rumored set list for Coachella — anything you would like to see added or changed? For me, I’d like to hear some Electronic? I love “Second Nature” would that not go over well live? Love that song. I am really fond of “Poisonous Intent” too.

    What do you think?

  28. Steven says:

To me, “Poisonous Intent” sounds like it could’ve been written about a certain bassist.

  29. Yvonne says:

Well, sounds like there’s a whole bunch of fans in Texas! (me and the hubby included) We also had to schedule around our jobs for the Chicago date, we still went and had a blast on our whirlwind 24 hr. stay! COME TO TEXAS – SPECIFICALLY HOUSTON!!!!…. Maybe Austin City Limits in October… We hope to see you soon!!

  30. ian robert says:

I took my car and drive from Montreal to NYC for Bad lieutenant and it was cancelled and I knew it the same day…
    I was so frustrated…
I bought a ticket to see American Idiot on Broadway the next day and I was quite surprised because after the show, Green day appeared in surprise and play two songs. I was happy for that.
Bad Lieutenant : next time, play on more cities in North America and come to play to Canada (Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver). You have some fans over there too!
    Thank’s
    Ian
